Invisalign in Japan: Cost, Treatment Planning & Moving Abroad
Understand the three stages of Invisalign fees in Japan, possible extra charges, moving abroad and choosing a clinic with orthodontic experience and English support.
Invisalign fees: three stages to budget for
Invisalign is a brand of clear aligners. In Japan, it helps to think of the fees in three stages: consultation and examination, active treatment, and care after treatment. Some clinics bundle these items; others charge separately.
1. Consultation and examination. An initial consultation may be free or cost around ¥30,000 at some clinics.
2. Active treatment. After assessment, the dentist explains the suitable plan or several options, their expected duration and the main treatment fee. You choose after understanding the clinical recommendation and the estimate; the lowest-priced plan may not be suitable for your teeth. The final treatment plan is decided in consultation with your dentist, based on the condition of your teeth and mouth.
3. Care after treatment. Retainers keep the teeth in their new position. Retainers, replacement retainers and follow-up appointments may be included or charged separately. Without retention after active treatment, teeth can shift back toward their original positions. Retention is essential to maintain the results, so make sure to include these costs in your budget.
How much should you expect to pay?
Orthodontic treatment in Japan is generally private, self-funded care outside public health insurance, so there is no fixed national price. As a broad planning illustration, a shorter or less extensive treatment may be around ¥600,000, while a complex, lengthy course can involve a budget approaching ¥2,000,000. These figures are not a nationwide average, minimum or maximum, and they are not a quote for your teeth.
One dental clinic lists its Standard plan at ¥660,000 including tax, with examination and diagnosis charged separately. The amount you actually pay depends on your diagnosis, the clinic, the selected plan and what is included.
Start with a consultation rather than committing from an advertisement. A detailed examination allows the dentist to explain a realistic plan, duration and total estimate. Check whether the amount includes tax, visits, retainers and any other proposed treatment.
When additional aligners cost extra
Teeth do not always move exactly as planned. A new scan and additional aligners, often called refinements, may be needed to adjust the treatment. This does not automatically mean treatment has failed.
Some plans include a set number of refinements or cover them within a defined period. Others charge for extra aligners, scans or adjustment appointments. An additional adjustment may cost much less than the original treatment package, but that cannot be assumed for every case: a major change of plan or a transfer may involve different fees.
The amount and the conditions vary by clinic. Have the clinic explain what is included and when an extra charge applies before starting.
Moving within Japan or living abroad
Tell the clinic before treatment if you may move or return home. Your dentist may help find a receiving clinic and prepare a referral letter and treatment records so that care can continue. The receiving clinic must agree to take over; transfer arrangements and fees depend on both clinics.
Another option at some clinics is remote monitoring combined with visits in person. One dental clinic describes overseas patients sending progress updates and returning for checks, with visits approximately every six months as one example. The interval must be set by the treating dentist; remote checks do not replace every procedure or an urgent examination.
People living in countries such as the United States or Australia may consider continuing treatment in Japan during return trips. Whether visits every few months, every six months or at a longer interval are workable depends on the case and the clinic. Agree on the travel schedule and a plan for problems while abroad before starting. Treatment and travel costs together determine whether this approach is worthwhile.
Choose orthodontic experience and clear English communication
Clear aligner treatment in Japan may be offered by general dentists as well as dentists with specialist orthodontic training. Being an Invisalign provider does not by itself mean that the dentist is an orthodontic specialist. Look at orthodontic training, experience and how the clinic diagnoses and monitors treatment.
The Japanese Orthodontic Society has warned about problems when diagnosis and monitoring are inadequate. A low fee alone does not show whether a clinic is suitable; equally, a high fee does not guarantee quality. Understand the reason for the price and the support included, rather than choosing by price alone.
Communication matters throughout orthodontic treatment. You need to understand whether the teeth are moving as expected and what to change if they are not. Choose a clinic that can explain the plan and respond to concerns in English during treatment, as well as at the first visit.

Frequently asked questions
Is Invisalign covered by Japanese public health insurance?
No. Invisalign treatment is self-funded and is not covered by Japanese public health insurance.
Can I finish treatment before I move?
It depends on your teeth and treatment plan. Only a clinician can estimate this after assessment. Tell the clinic your move date before starting.
Is a cheaper Invisalign plan safe?
Price alone cannot answer that. In Japan, clear aligners may be offered by dentists without specialist orthodontic training. Look at the dentist’s orthodontic training and experience, diagnosis, monitoring and ability to manage problems. A low price does not automatically mean unsafe care, but the reason for the price and any limits need to be understood.
