What to know before you go in Tokyo
Dental care in Tokyo works the same way as everywhere else in Japan. If you are enrolled in Japanese health insurance, you pay 30% of the fee for covered treatment and the clinic bills the rest. Checkups, fillings, root canals, extractions and gum treatment are covered. Whitening, implants, ceramic crowns and most adult orthodontics are not, and are quoted privately by each clinic.
Clinics in Tokyo usually split treatment across several short visits rather than doing everything at once, so plan for more than one appointment. Bring your insurance card (保険証) and, if you have one, your residence card. If this is your first dental visit in Japan, our full guide to going to the dentist in Japan walks through the whole process.
Treatments available across the Tokyo clinics listed here: Comprehensive Oral Rehabilitation, Cosmetic Dentistry, Dental Implants, Dental Whitening, Emergency Dentistry, Endodontics, General Dentistry, Home Visit Dental Care, Oral Surgery, Orthodontics, Pediatric Dentistry, Periodontal Dentistry, Preventive Dentistry, Prostodontics, TMJ.
Frequently asked questions
Are there English-speaking dentists in Tokyo?
Yes. We currently list 9 clinics in Tokyo that treat patients in English, covering Shinjuku-ku, Minato-ku, Shibuya-ku, Chuo-ku, Ota-ku. Some also speak Chinese, German and Korean. More clinics in the prefecture speak some English without advertising it, so message us if none of these are convenient for you.
Do I need Japanese health insurance to see a dentist in Tokyo?
No. You can be treated without it, but you pay the full fee rather than 30%. Tourists and new arrivals are seen routinely. Whitening, implants and most adult orthodontics are private-pay for everyone, insured or not.
How do I book if I do not speak Japanese?
Message us on LINE or WhatsApp with your area, your symptom and your preferred language. We check availability, book in Japanese on your behalf and send you the details. There is no charge for this.
What if I need a clinic somewhere else in Tokyo?
Tell us the station or neighbourhood you need. Our listings are the clinics we work with directly, but we can also point you to non-partner clinics nearby — in that case you contact them yourself and we tell you what to say.
Not sure which clinic fits you?
Tell us your area, your symptom and your language. We'll match you with a clinic and help you book — free, usually within 24 hours.
